Around Osaka Castle

An Afternoon Beside Osaka Castle.

A short guide to Osaka Castle Park and the small wooden complex called Nanoniwa, just beside it. Seasonal highlights, walking routes, and where to pause for a parfait.

A Year at Osaka Castle Park.

Osaka Castle Park changes face through the year — cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and plum. Each season pairs well with a different kind of afternoon at Nanoniwa.

  1. Spring — Cherry Blossoms

Around 3,000 cherry trees bloom in late March to early April, with the Nishinomaru Garden, peach grove, and stone walls as backdrop. Best visited around 7 AM to avoid the crowds.

  2. Early Summer — Greenery & Hydrangea

A pleasant time for long walks. Hydrangeas begin to bloom near the plum grove. The terrace at Nanoniwa is at its best. Merrily's seasonal Japanese melon and mango parfaits begin.

  3. Summer — Lotus & Sunset

Lotus flowers open in the outer moat in the early morning. Days are hot, so dawn walks and evening castle silhouettes are the recommended timing. The light after 5 PM is particularly beautiful.

  4. Autumn — Foliage

Autumn colors peak around Nishinomaru Garden and the Gokuraku Bridge in mid- to late November. Comfortable weather for spending a full day exploring the grounds. This season coincides with Merrily's grape parfait.

  5. Winter — Plum

The plum grove holds around 1,250 trees that bloom from late January through late February. White, red, and weeping plums open in turn against the clear winter air. The season for Merrily's strawberry parfait paired with a warm drink.

About Nanoniwa.

Nanoniwa is a low-rise wooden complex that opened in 2025 inside Naniwanomiya Park. It gathers cafes, restaurants, and a few shops in a quiet setting.

Naniwanomiya was an imperial palace from the Asuka to Nara period (7th-8th century). Today the palace site is preserved as a public park, and Nanoniwa sits inside it — a place where history and the present occupy the same field of view.

It is two minutes on foot from Tanimachi 4-chome Station, just southwest of Osaka Castle Park. A place where locals and travelers mix gently. PARFAIT de MERRILY is in unit C-4.
